Ingri Høyland - bio ‘25
Ingri Høyland is a Norwegian composer and sound artist, who works with transferring fluid mental states and bodies into sound and stories.
She does this in a wide spectrum from dance installations, mixtapes, collaborations and film. In late 2023 Høyland released “Ode To Stone”, a commissioned sound piece dedicated to a protected natural area at the coast of Denmark. The album was received to great critical acclaim and attention with reviews from Pitchfork and other magazines and daily’s -
“The Universe seems hidden inside the seven pieces of Ode To Stone, a silky journey dotted with traps and temptations, brilliant jewels touched by immaculate virginity. Superb.” - Sound and Silence (FR)
With a passion for cross-disciplinary work, Høyland is frequently involved with projects of cinematic sounds and visual aesthetics. As an example of her practice Høyland was in 2023 invited by CPH:DOX to compose and perform a score for Shozin Fukui’s sci-fi thriller “Catepillar” from 1985. SMK also invited her to interpret visual works in the theme of bodies in art, where she worked with “And in his Eyes, I Saw Death” and “The Sick Girl” by Ejnar Nielsen, the work resulted in the sound piece and performance “Body Longing Death” performed at SMK october 2023.
Høyland’s work is rooted in an intuitive approach to electronic composition, but it is also driven by an understanding of structure and narrative. Her music often unfolds like a story, where sound functions not only as a textural backdrop, but as a vessel for conveying emotional depth and drama. This balance allows her to explore a wide range of human experiences — from stillness and vulnerability to expansive, transformative moments—creating immersive soundscapes that captivate and invite deep listening.
Ingri Høyland started making and releasing music under the moniker Hôy La in 2018, where she released critical acclaimed albums such “There’s A Girl” and “X Heads” performing her music on festivals and venues such as Roskilde Festival, By:Larm, Kantine Am Berghain, Eurosonic etc.
